If you are passionate about history and want to learn more about the town of Calvinia, you can visit the Calvinia Museum. It is housed in the old synagogue which was built in the 1920s and is filled with unique farming artefacts and items which tell the rich history of this charming town.
Here you can view traditional farming methods with old equipment such as a bucket pump, a flour mill, and also cobbling and blacksmith workshops. There are also fascinating objects on display such as antique soap and candle-making items. Antiquated items such as porcelain bowls and plates, as well as clothing and even brass buttons, can be found on display in this quaint and educational museum.
While Calvinia might not be a bustling city, it certainly has its own amount of charm that attracts tourists, and one of these attractions is the Calvinia Post Box. Now, this might sound like a relatively ordinary thing to find in a town, but this post box is over six metres tall.
The post box was originally a water tower, but was converted into a post box after it was seen to be falling into disrepair. It was situated in the Dutch Reformed Church’s yard and after a local commented that it looked rather like a post box, the project began to convert it. It now acts as a functional post box with every letter that is posted from it receiving a hand-stamped flower, due to Calvinia being home to a stunning array of wildflowers that bloom each year.
Calvinia is in the Northern Cape, which means that it has some amazing scenery to behold. One way that you can see this scenery for yourself is to try your hand at the Oorlogskloof hiking trail. It is situated in the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve and has two trails to choose from, namely the Rock Pigeon and Remeron Pigeon trails.
There are also two hikes to choose from, known as the Leopard Trap and the Rietvlei hiking trails. The nature reserve is highly unique due to its varied selection of flowers and plants which grow there. You will also be able to see stunning views of the mountain ranges as well as San paintings and animals like the mountain zebra, springbok and leopard. It is a nature lover's dream, so be sure to bring along water, a hat, and sunscreen to be perfectly geared up to enjoy the experience while managing the heat in the area, particularly in the summer months.
If you enjoy hiking and would like to see parts of the Karoo that you might not have known existed the Tankwa Camino Trail is the ideal activity for you. It is a long and physically strenuous ten-day hike through the Tankwa Karoo, but the scenery alone is definitely worth the effort.
It is important to note that this is not for inexperienced hikers and should not be attempted if you have not completed at least two three to four-day hikes at some point. The Tankwa Camino trail is a true test of one’s endurance, as you will have to hike through blistering heat carrying a backpack and other supplies. Every 25km, the hosts will set up a “pit stop” with potjies filled with delicious food alongside cinnamon-spiked pumpkin fritters.
The Northern Cape is one of the largest provinces in South Africa, and it is also one of the driest, but in no way does it lack beauty. Calvinia is one of the smaller towns located in this province, and is full of fun and exciting activities for the whole family to enjoy. You can visit the local museum and send a postcard from the iconic post box. Or you could go hiking along the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve and test your mettle with the strenuous Tankwa Camino trail trek. Whatever you choose to do, you will be able to experience life a little differently for a while.
